Barley Straw for algae control

Saturday March  14th

Many thanks to the club volunteers who gave up two hours of their time today creating and placing barley straw netting sacks into the two lakes.  Barley straw acts as a natural, preventative, and eco-friendly method of controlling pond algae during the spring and summer months, needing renewal every six to eight weeks.  The weather was kind to us today after last nights storm and torrential rain had left everywhere water logged.  The straw was purchased locally and the netting from a well known auction site, the prices were very competitive although the straw bales had to be collected in person (thanks James).

Two of the committee members have recently attended a two day Environment Agency training and awarness course in West Haughton, they took away a great deal of information and gained a lot of knowledge to include a better understanding  of water management and maintenance.

As a club we are doing really well and were recognised for having systems and equipment in place that other clubs attending the same event did not.
